KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, Katie Hnida got to being -- or, she got to be feeling pleased with herself today. Can I get that all out? Under all those pads and that No. 2 jersey, she just kicked the gender rules of college football clean over the uprights.
Our Matt Morrison here to tell us about her historic achievement. OK how do I say it? Hnida?
MATT MORRISON, CNN SPORTS CORRESPONDENT: Hnida.
PHILLIPS: Hnida.
MORRISON: Katie Hnida.
PHILLIPS: Katie Hnida. Boy, I'll know that name soon, won't i?
MORRISON: Well, it's in the record books and it certainly is a gender breaking operation that she completed on Saturday night. The New Mexico Lobos kicker is the first woman to score in a division 1 college football game. And it's a comeuppance of sorts for Katie, who last year became the first female to get into a division I football game when she played in the Las Vegas Bowl against UCLA, but her kick attempt at an extra point was blocked.
Here's Katie Hnida kicking an extra point for New Mexico against University of Texas -- or Texas State San Marco, the first points ever scored by a female in a division I football game. Now it was the first of two. She kicked two extra points in this one. And Katie Hnida gets in the record books as the first lady to score in a Division I college football game.
And you got to love the fact that she was even on the field for the Lobos. Her teammates did everything they could in support of the senior walk-on to get her into the football game and by that scoring 58 points to begin with, she was the third string kicker on the roster. The coach didn't give her any slack in this one. The two other kickers did their job, Katie got her opportunity. She made good on the first extra point she tried. She made good on the second extra point. The Lobos win the game -- 72-8 was the final score, and Katie Hnida's basking in the glow of a record performance.
Now she's not the first woman to ever play in a college football game or score, for that matter. Couple years ago, there was a young lady in Jacksonville, Alabama who kicked one, Ashley Martin, who had tried her best to get on the field for a number of college football teams. Finally got her opportunity and made good on it with an extra point for Jacksonville State in Alabama. So we're going to tip our cap to her. She is the first woman ever to score in a college football game. But Katie Hnida gets a little extra bump because she is the first to score in a Division I College football game.
She's been around a little bit. She had been a kicker in high school and a good one for her high school team. She had tried out for the team at Colorado and endured what would expect, some sexual harassment...
PHILLIPS: Sure.
MORRISON: ... or gender harassment -- let's put it that way. When you're trying to break the barriers in a very macho sport like college football. She transferred from Colorado. New Mexico took her on. Got her on the field. And again, it wasn't, you know -- it wasn't a gift. She worked her way on to the team. She is the third string kicker. And when they scored enough points to allow the third string kicker on...
PHILLIPS : She was in.
MORRISON: She was there and she made good.
PHILLIPS: All right. I'm waiting for the NFL. I want to see it happen. We'll keep our eye on Hnida.
MORRISON: Good luck.
PHILLIPS: You never know.
MORRISON: A lot of money on the line there, a lot of pressure. And you know what? Great, great press for New Mexico.
PHILLIPS: That's true. Absolutely. Matt, thank you.
PHILLIPS: You're welcome, Kyra.
