MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: A bizarre investigation in Erie, Pennsylvania, just got a little stranger. First there was a bank robbery, then the alleged robber died when a bomb exploded -- it was attached to his neck. And now there are new details about an unusual weapon found in the man's car. And still the question remains, Did he plan the robbery, or was he forced to do it?
Our Mike Brooks is on the case. Here's the latest.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

MIKE BROOKS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: A source close to the investigation has told CNN that a published report today of what the FBI has been calling a unique weapon is very accurate.

They are describing this weapon as homemade or custom made and shaped like a walking cane. The sources also told CNN that this walking cane weapon is capable of being fired like a gun. A detailed analysis of the machinework on this cane has not been completed by the FBI lab.

An 11:00 press conference was scheduled today here in Erie, Pennsylvania, but the Pennsylvania State Police said it was canceled for -- quote -- "investigatory reasons." A source says that press conference may be rescheduled for tomorrow here in Erie.

Mike Brooks, CNN, Erie, Pennsylvania.
