KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: A powerful hurricane called Fabian is getting closer to Bermuda. But residents are already getting a major preview with strong winds and high waves. Our very brave Gary Tuchman joins us by phone now with the latest -- Gary.
GARY TUCHMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Kyra, that's nice of you to say. And I can't talk (UNINTELLIGIBLE) hurricane-force winds have arrived. We're watching tall (UNINTELLIGIBLE) palm trees that have no business still standing shaking and looking like they're going to fall anytime. Buildings shaking, canopies shaking.

We're standing right along the beach. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) the hurricane center tells us that winds right now are gusting (UNINTELLIGIBLE) 100 miles an hour, sustained winds 75 miles per hour which are now hurricane-force winds.

This appears to be a direct hit on the chain of islands known as Bermuda, six (UNINTELLIGIBLE) islands connected (UNINTELLIGIBLE).

According to authorities, they're anticipating there will be (UNINTELLIGIBLE) damage when this is all done. But right now police are not able to tell us because the conditions are so bad that people just can't go out in this right now.

There were up until about an hour and a half ago tourists standing and watching. They are now all gone. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) a very powerful hurricane. And it appears it's the fourth hurricane since 1926 to directly hit Bermuda. It may surprise people thinking that Bermuda gets lot of them. But they actually skirt lots of hurricanes. This is only the fourth time they've been directly hit by one -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: All right. Our Gary Tuchman. We can sure get a sense of how powerful that hurricane is. It's hard to hear him by phone. And obviously we lost satellite transmission. So we couldn't see Gary. But he will continue to cover that story for us.
