KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: All right, a number of things developing today. Now we're getting word that Peter Ueberroth decided to quit the California governor's race. This word just into CNN. Bob Franken joining us live from Los Angeles. What's the deal with Peter, Bob?
BOB FRANKEN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Well CNN has learned that he's going to be calling a news conference later this afternoon and will be announcing he's going to pull out. Ueberroth whose campaign has been mired in single digits throughout this campaign will be pulling out.
According to one of the Republican sources he will not be endorsing another candidate at this time. What he wants to do, and I'm quoting now, is "plans to meet with other candidates to hear their plans for job creation." That's a quote. After which, he's going to announce an endorsement.
And by the way, that is not limited to just the other Republican candidates. There are really two primary ones, McClintock and of course Schwarzenegger. He would also meets spokesman with Cruz Bustamante. or for that matter even Gray Davis if they would want to meet with him. Of course Ueberroth is a Republican.
Now here's something that quite interesting. There's a new field poll out today and it shows that the Republican Schwarzenegger is trailing the Democrat Cruz Bustamante who, of course, is campaigning to be the recall alternative of Gray Davis is out. Anyway, there's a five-point spread. Ueberroth in that very same poll gets five points.
So, of course, the question is where would most of his votes go? He is generally considered a more moderate, quote, unquote, "moderate Republican" and Schwarzenegger in the early analysis might be the person who would be the beneficiary of it.
But in any case, from a variety of Republican sources CNN has learned that Peter Ueberroth is pulling out of the recall race which is going to improve Republican chances, by most analysis, probably going to improve Republican chance considerably -- Kyra.
PHILLIPS: All right, Bob Franken covering the race for us. Thank you. We'll continue to check in with you.
