KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Now the California recall. One major candidate is pulling out of race while Governor Gray Davis is taking heat from a new field or taking heart. A new Field Poll showing support for the recall that might be stalled. Debate No. 2 got under way in Los Angeles about 45 minutes ago with one of the candidates again missing in action.
Our own national correspondent Bob Franken is there -- Bob.

BOB FRANKEN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: And the story of the hour is that Peter Ueberroth, who is the Republican who had not really broken into double digits at all in this campaign has decided to call it quits, will be making an official announcement in the next short while according to Republican sources. He's going to pull out.

Now what's interesting is that in the latest Field Poll, it was just released today, he showed up having 5 percent of the vote. That is the amount of percentage that separates Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Republican, from Democrat Cruz Bustamante in the effort to replace Governor Gray Davis, in case Davis is not successful in his effort to battle the recall.

By the way, in that part of it, that right now shows a 55 percent of the vote -- of people who were questioned, say they favor a recall, 40 percent say they don't. A slight improvement for Davis' prospects.

But back to the effort to replace him. Schwarzenegger's campaign, now that Ueberroth has pulled out and said that he wants to meet with each candidate before there is an endorsement to discuss their plans for job creation. A spokesman for Schwarzenegger said, "We'd like to accept Mr. Ueberroth's invitation. He has running a positive campaign based on the issue, and Arnold looks to meeting with him to discuss how the two can team up to create jobs and turn California's campaign around."

We also have calls into the campaign of Tom McClintock who is a conservative Republican who shows up substantially in the polls at 13 points. Also calls into the Bustamante campaign and the campaign of Governor Gray Davis. The Ueberroth source we talked to said that Ueberroth would even be willing to meet with the Democratic candidates if they wanted to see if they could pick up whatever endorsement he might provide.

But Ueberroth is out, narrowing the field a little bit and causing a reaction that we'll have to see occurs as this campaign is in the final month with a startling development every time you turn around -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: Isn't that the truth? Bob Franken, thank you.
