MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's get back to the California recall. When last we spoke with CNN's Bob Franken we were talking about pressure that might be put Tom McClintock, the other Republican in the recall running there. Now, some news that might add a little fuel to the fire for him to step aside. Bob Franken, take it away.
BOB FRANKEN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: CNN has learned that the congressman who, in fact, was the one who financed the recall campaign, Darryl Issa, has decided, according to sources who are absolutely aware of his thinking, that he will endorse Arnold Schwarzenegger. The sources say that negotiations are going on right now with the Schwarzenegger campaign for a joint appearance with Schwarzenegger and Issa tomorrow.
Issa, of course, a conservative Republican Congressman, is very close to Tom McClintock, but he is among the Republicans who believe the Republican vote is being split right now and the party needs to rally behind one candidate. Issa has now decided that that candidate is going to be Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Issa, of course, was somebody who flirted with running for office himself. But now he's decided he can have his most influence by getting behind Schwarzenegger and trying to make this homestretch go down.
Of course, Schwarzenegger and McClintock, Tom McClintock, appeared at the debate last night. Schwarzenegger was involved in a lot of bickering with the other candidates, particularly Arianna Huffington -- rather, excuse me, Schwarzenegger was involved in the bickering.
McClintock stayed pretty much away from attacking Arnold Schwarzenegger. But he has told just about everybody who has asked, including people who've asked him today, he's in the race, that he has no intentions of withdrawing.
But the pressure is beginning. There's going to be a meeting of party chairmen later today. And now we're being told that Congressman Darrell Issa, somebody who is a soulmate of McClintock's, will be meeting with Schwarzenegger tomorrow, calling a news conference and announcing he is endorsing Schwarzenegger.
O'BRIEN: Oh, to be a fly on the wall during all these discussions. Thank you very much, Bob Franken. Stay close because obviously developments warrant you being nearby out there in Los Angeles.
