KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: A U.S. soldier was killed and another wounded during an attack on the convoy near Fallujah. Meanwhile, in Tikrit, a raid to route out Saddam Hussein supporters nets 92 detainees.
CNN's Michael Holmes is in Baghdad with more.

MICHAEL HOLMES, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Kyra. That's right. Good afternoon.

The first incident I want to tell you about happened at a place near Habanea (ph). It's about 40 miles west of where I am in Baghdad. One U.S. soldier was killed. Another one was injured in what the military is saying began with an IED, that ubiquitous acronym that stands for improvised explosive device.

What happened was that device went off, and then a fierce gunfight erupted. It involved U.S. helicopters and armored vehicles. It went on for hours. And at end, one U.S. soldier was killed, another injured. No word on Iraqi casualties at this point.

Now in Fallujah, six U.S. soldiers were wounded when their convoy came under attack, that, too, involving an improvised explosive device. There was plenty of active in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit.

As you pointed out, more than a dozen raids were held overnight. This was a joint operation, the biggest involving Iraqi police and U.S. military. These dozen or 15 we're told raids that took place netted 92 detainees. However, the focus, the targets, if you like, of the raids were more than a dozen specific suspects, members of the Fedayeen. We're told that ammunition was seized in these raids, but none of the Fedayeen that were being sought. As you said, the largest Iraqi police-U.S. military raid so far to route out insurgents -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: All right, our Michael Holmes, live from Baghdad. Thank you.
