Voter Mood in California

CANDY CROWLEY, CNN ANCHOR: With its oversized ballot and array of colorful candidates, the recall race has made California the punchline to more than a few bad jokes.
As the race draws to a close, CNN's Kelly Wallace asked some Golden State voters what they think about the recall campaign.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
KELLY WALLACE, CNN WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Bring it on, says this fixture on the Venice Beach boardwalk, about all the hoopla surrounding the California recall.
HARRY PERRY, VENICE BEACH ENTERTAINER: It's great fun, man. This place gets too boring.
WALLACE: It's certainly not dull. Everywhere you turn, it's all recall all the time.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We are one week away from the big recall.
PETER JENNINGS, ABC ANCHOR: In California today...
WALLACE: Even the national newscasts are spending more time on California than on the race for the White House. And the candidates, well, they are getting nasty in those ads.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He ducks tough questions.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Gray Davis has mismanaged...

WALLACE: Who's listening? Not this woman, a Democrat living in San Francisco.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I hit the mute button on the television, pay no attention whatsoever.
WALLACE: This man, a Republican, says he's got mixed feelings about the ad blitz. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Part tune-out, part listen, part interest, part frustration.
WALLACE: Back in Venice, on Muscle Beach, you might expect most to be pumped up with a former bodybuilder in the race. There are some signs of that, but also sentiments like these.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The whole recall thing, it's kind of (EXPLETIVE DELETED)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It just makes a mockery of the whole system.
WALLACE: But 36-year-old Richard (ph) backs the recall and Arnold for governor.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I can't think of anybody I would rather have as governor than some cool dude like Arnold.
WALLACE: However, Richard is not a registered voter, which leads us to wonder how many people will actually vote, especially as it turns more and more into a rough-and-tumble race.
(on camera): Anyone else here going to vote next week?
(voice-over): With voter turnout a question mark, the only certainty perhaps...
PERRY: Have new energy. I love that. Spice up the planet.
WALLACE: ... the recall will be spicing up California and national politics for at least one more week.
