KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Celebrating 25 years as pope, cardinals, bishops and delegations from around the world have converged on Vatican City to mark that milestone.
Rome bureau chief Alessio Vinci has a rooftop view of it all, live from Rome.
Hi, Alessio.
ALESSIO VINCI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello to you, Kyra.
From a very windy rooftop here in Rome, just outside St. Peter's Square in the Vatican, where earlier today, Pope John Paul II presided over a general audience in front of some tens of thousands of pilgrims. Many have arrived here ahead of a week-long celebration, to celebrate of course the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's pontiff.
The pope arriving in the square in his now very famous pope- mobile, the open-decked jeep, that has been really a landmark, if you want, of this pope, especially during his trips abroad. This is a way perhaps also to tell pilgrims and even Vatican watchers that he is doing just fine.
Usually when those general audience, which take place every week, the pope does not always take those -- especially when he is tired. But yet the pope today sent a strong message that he actually is up for these week-long celebrations.
And indeed when the pope addressed the pilgrims in many languages, including English, Polish, German, Italian, we heard him with a strong voice, somewhat stronger than in the past, although he did took some pauses. He uttered a few words here and there, trying to take some breath, but yet the pope did manage to finish all his address.
Of course the big event tomorrow here in St. Peter's Square, 6:00 p.m. local time here, Noon Eastern, the pope will celebrate this mass, open air mass, in front of dignitaries from all around the world, including the United States. The U.S. delegation led by Columba (ph) Bush, of course a sister-in-law of the U.S. president. She will lead a delegation of Americans here. Also delegations popes from the pope's native country, Poland, the Polish president here, will be also here, as well as Lacuenza (ph), man with the pope who is being credited for taking down the Berlin Wall -- the Eastern Wall in Eastern Europe.
Back to you, Kyra.
PHILLIPS: Alessio Vinci, live from Rome, thank you.
