KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Answering fire with fire, Israel carried out three separate missile attacks in Gaza City, one near a street full of school children. The strikes follow yesterday's attacks by Palestinian militants who fired homemade rockets into southern Israel from Gaza in the deadly ambush of Israeli soldiers.
Our Chris Burns is in Jerusalem with the latest -- Chris.

CHRIS BURNS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, hi, Kyra.

Well, Tough action and tough talk from Ariel Sharon, the Israeli prime minister, as he opened up the winter session of the Israeli parliament, getting catcalls from the benches of the left and the Arab legislators. Even some of those being thrown out as they catcalled Mr. Sharon who gave a speech, very hard-lined, but also a bit of an olive branch, saying he demanded that the Palestinian Authority crack down the militants, and that Israeli will do it anyway by itself.

Also attacking Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian Authority president, as an obstacle to peace, and pledging that within a year, there will be a security fence around Jerusalem. This is a fence that the Palestinians called a Berlin Wall that cuts into the West Bank.

At the same time, however, he said he expects that in the next few months, there could be a breakthrough in the peace process, and that he wants to see the road map for peace progress.

On the ground, more attacks by the Israelis against the militants in Northern Gaza. Three airstrikes, one knocking out a vehicle, killing two Hamas militants and killing another man, also injuring at least 30 people, including schoolchildren.

Also striking at two weapons storage facilities by the militants. That is what the Israelis say. They continue ongoing after those militants, after they have fired more rockets into Israel, and again tonight another sign of defiance from the militants. They fired another again another Kassam rocket into Israel and two mortars at the Israeli Jewish settlements inside Gaza. No injuries are reported, but again, this is a statement the militants are still very defiant.

Back to you, Kyra.

PHILLIPS: Chris Burns, live from Jerusalem. Thank you.
