KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: More breaking news to tell you about coming out of Iraq. We were telling you about some explosions heard in Baghdad proper, the city of Karbala, also the site of at least one explosion. We're told three area dead in the wake of this. Unclear what the target was. Let's get more information on this from CNN's Matthew Chance standing by in Baghdad -- Matthew.
MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Thank you, Miles.

Again, details very sketchy about this new developing situation in the town of Karbala about 65 miles or so to the south of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. We understand from U.S. military officials that they say a bomb has exploded in front of a hotel in the center of that town on a busy street, but we don't know exactly whereabouts in Karbala that explosion took place. We understand it's opposite a mosque now.

Karbala, you know, is one of the main centers of the Islam sect in this country and is the home to the Shrine of Iman Hussein, who is the son of the founder of the Shiites sect of Islam, so that could be significant. We're certainly going to try to get more information on that.

What we have from the moment coming from agency reports is that at least three people have been confirmed as dead by those two different agencies that we've been seeing. Three people killed, another 12 possibly said to have been injured. Obviously, we'll bring you more information on that issue when it comes to us, but, for the moment, that's the extent of the information we have about that explosion in Karbala -- Miles.

PHILLIPS: Lots to keep track of there. Matthew Chance, stay close and thank you very much.
