KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: He was considered one of the Cincinnati Reds top prospects, but yesterday, rookie outfielder Dernell Stenson was found dead on a roadside near phoenix. Homicide detectives say that he was shot and runover. A man arrested behind the wheel of Stenson's SUV is charged with stealing the vehicle, but so far, no filed charges in connection with Stenson's death.
Patricia Biggs wit "The Arizona Republic" newspaper joins us now on the phone from Phoenix. She's been covering the story. Patricia, do you know if Stenson knew the suspect?

PATRICIA BIGGS, "ARIZONA REPUBLIC": We do not know that yet, no.

PHILLIPS: Where does it stand right now with regard to this man who was arrested behind the wheel? Does it look like a carjacking?

BIGGS: You know the police are keeping this pretty close, as they usually do this quickly after a homicide. They're calling him an investigative lead. Obviously, they're questioning him.

It seems pretty coincidental that you would find someone two hours later in the car of a man who was murdered.

PHILLIPS: Now, are they looking -- I understand there was another killing in that area, another...

BIGGS: Yes. Two days earlier, early in the morning also, a man was shot in his car and left for dead. The car was not stolen. But in that car, there was also a live pit bull. So I don't know.

The police are looking at that. They're not saying one way or another whether they're connected yet. They have not ruled it out and they haven't said for sure they are related.

Both victims were shot, in Mr. Stenson's case, he was also run over. The other victim was left in the car.

PHILLIPS: Now Stenson, tell us about him. Was he considered one of the top prospects on the team? Can you give us some background tell us about this ballplayer?

BIGGS: You're getting out of my league now. I'm pretty much a cop reporter. I know he was in the valley playing for the Arizona fall league with the Scottsdale Scorpions. And that's about all I know about him, to be honest.

PHILLIPS: What more about the investigation can you tell us?

BIGGS: I know they're working this one very hard. Chandler, the city in which he was found, up until this week, all year, there were only three homicides. Two of those they solved.

To have two homicides in two days is a pretty big deal for this town. So they're working it pretty hard. I would expect more information later on today after they're done investigating Mr. Riddle (ph), the man they found with Mr. Stenson's car.

PHILLIPS: Looking for a possible link?

BIGGS: Yes.

PHILLIPS: Patricia Biggs with "The Arizona Republic," we sure appreciate it. We'll continue to check in with you as you work the story.

BIGGS: Sounds good.

PHILLIPS: Thanks, Patricia.
