HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: In London, conspiracy charges were filed today against a man who a suspected accomplice of Richard Reid, the so-called shoe bomber.
Our Matthew Chance is in London and joins us now with the latest on this story.
Matthew, hello to you.
MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Heidi, thank you very much.
Some interesting linkages that have been forged between these two terrorist suspects by the British authorities, Sajid Badat, who was arrested in Gloucester, has been linked to Richard Reid, better known of course as the shoe bomber, who sentenced this January to life imprisonment for attempting to employee up a U.S. airliner en route from Paris to Miami with explosives stuffed in his shoe. The charges against Sajid Badat say that he unlawfully and maliciously conspired with Richard Reid and others unknown to the authorities at this point to cause an explosion likely to endanger life or cause serious injury.
Now you may remember Richard Reid's trial, his defense attorneys were arguing quite strongly that Richard Reid, although he sympathized with Osama bin Laden and made no secret of it, he acted alone and was not part of a larger conspiracy. Prosecutors argued at the trial all along they found a hair, a fingerprint on the explosives, inside the shoe, that were not that of Richard Reed, pointing to a wider conspiracy, perhaps the possibility of Richard Reid belonging to a terrorist network. Certainly the charging of Sajid Badat here in Gloucester does tend to support that prosecution theory that there was a wider conspiracy -- Heidi.
COLLINS: All right. Matthew Chance, thanks so much, live with that story for us, and the very latest.
