KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: For a while, most people in Clinton, Illinois, thought it was an accident. But now Amanda Hamm and her boyfriend, Maurice Lagrone, are charged with murder in connection with the deaths of her three young children. And here's the twist.
Mikaela Hunt at our affiliate station WAND reports the Susan Smith case has come up when talking with police about the tragedy.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ROGER MASSEY, DEWITT COUNTY SHERIFF: Well, obviously, the information indicates the it was an intentional act, yes.

MIKAELA HUNT, WAND REPORTER (voice-over): DeWitt County Sheriff Roger Massey was able to tell a mass of reporters, there are murder charges, but, as for a motive, all he'll say is there is one.

MASSEY: That's one of the things we're not going to get into. That's one of the things you're going to have to get at trial.

HUNT: A neighbor and friend of the Lagrone and Hamm's has children of her own.

DIANE TODD, NEIGHBOR: I just don't see how a mother could do something like that.

HUNT: Diane Todd can't believe the drownings were intentional.

TODD: They meant a lot to them. They did more with their kids than most of us do with ours.

HUNT: The children and parents in this community, though, still do not know what's going to happen in the courtroom. And right now, they're not sure who they're going to support.

TODD: That, we really are not sure. As I said, our main thing right now is we want to know how and why. We want to know why we lost three babies.

HUNT: The drownings on that September night still weigh heavy on the hearts and minds of investigators. The sheriff says, from what he's read, there are similarities between this case and the Susan Smith case.

MASSEY: It does have an impact on probably your personal life and everything, because a lot of us have dedicated these last few months and weeks to the case. But we have to speak for those three children. And we're going to do that.

HUNT: In Clinton, Mikaela Hunt, WAND news.
