KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: The story right now just into CNN now with regard to the terror alert, we are being told now in response to this, Los Angeles Police Making a number of arrests. Our Charles Feldman working the story from the L.A. bureau. Charles, what do you know?
CHARLES FELDMAN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: A few things happening on that front. I'm told by a high-ranking LAPD source that in the past 48 hours a number of individuals, I don't have the exact number, have been arrested on non-terrorist-related charges. In one case, for example, an individual was arrested on credit card fraud charges, I'm told.
But these are individuals, I'm told, who came to the attention of law enforcement post-9/11 and these are people that they would very much like to either keep off the streets or question further. And so they've been arrested on other charges. But again, not charges related to terrorism but people that law enforcement has an interest in, related to possible terrorist acts.
I'm also told by a federal law enforcement source that several federal grand jury subpoenas have been issued in recent days for some individuals here in the Southern California region, trying to get access to some documents and in some cases I'm told to try to compel some testimony before a grand jury.
So one source told me that this is -- he described it as a, quote, "massive investigative effort." And the source was talking about not just what's going on nationwide but specific to this region, massive investigative effort. And the source also said that there is a sense of "trying to beat a ticking clock." That's a direct quote.
That there is a concern, as we all have been talking about for the past several days, about a possible terrorist attack or attacks within U.S. borders sometime over the holiday season. And that, in part, I'm told is driving this very severe effort to try to this wart something that may be in the planning stages. For example, the Los Angeles Police Department has more people involved in this investigation now than at any time post-9/11. Back to you.
PHILLIPS: Charles Feldman at L.A. Thank you. Continue to check in with you.
