MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's turn our attention now to Iraq and the uphill battle to restore law and order there. The U.S. coalition made some arrests in the south and faces those close engagements, I should say, with insurgents in the north. We'll go live now to Karl Penhaul in Baghdad.
Hello, Karl.

KARL PENHAUL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Miles.

Some arrests today announced by the Polish commanders of the multinational force down in the city of Karbala, about 50 miles south of Baghdad. That city was the scene of the devastating car bomb attacks on Saturday. Those claimed the lives of seven coalition force members. Twelve Iraqis and more than 160 others were wounded in those bombings.

Now the Polish commanders in the city have told us they've arrested five suspects in connection with those bombings. They haven't, though, disclosed the nationality of those suspects. I say nationalities because on Sunday, the Polish general in the city said that he suspected the foreign fighters, possible with links to al Qaeda, could have been involved in those attacks.

Now in addition to that, overnight, Sunday there was a firefight involving U.S. troops in the northern city of Mosul. They came into contact with people they're describing as suspected members of the Ansar al Islam group. You'll remember that Washington accuses Ansar al Islam with links to al Qaeda also. In the gunfight, three suspected guerrilla fighters were killed. Two members of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division were injured, but we understand they're now in a stable condition, out of danger -- Miles.

O'BRIEN: CNN's Karl Penhaul, in Baghdad, thank you very much.
