KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, there may be bone-chilling temperatures out there, but if you're in to skiing, it's the best time of the year. All you need is the perfect gear and Ali Velshi.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: This is a freedom pant by North Face. And it's fully waterproof and breathable.

ALI VELSHI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: The top the I'm wearing is just a basic turtleneck. It's about $20.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: This is a layer that has to feel good. It has to have enough stuff in it to keep you warm.

VELSHI: I'm going to need this. And tell me a bit about what I've got in my hand. This is by North face.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It is totally waterproof, totally breathable.

VELSHI: Is there anything that makes ski gloves special or are they just warm gloves?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: They're generally more insulated. Those goggles, great value, really good range of vision that you wants something that fits your face well.

VELSHI: Sure.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The most important thing when buying a boot is not get this boot or that boot. It's really based on what fits your foot best. Really the story in the last few years has been the performance on the low end has come way up.

VELSHI (voice-over): We'll review the prices a little later. First, let's look at the high-end gear.

(on camera): I've got a different set of pants on.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: These pants are three-ply, so tougher, fully taped, fully waterproof. This is soft shell. The new thing with ski clothes and outdoor clothes in general is softer.

VELSHI: What's this got?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: This is, again three-ply, like the pants, totally waterproof. And then the glove, these are more articulated fingers. You've got more adjustability here. This will keep the snow out.

VELSHI: And while we're going fancy on everything, why not the goggles, too?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: A little more streamlined, polycarbonate lenses. With higher performance, it means you're going to get a stiffer boot, one that conforms more tightly to your foot.

VELSHI: This is a higher-end set of skis and it comes with these bindings.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, when the binding and ski work together, you get better performance out both of them.

VELSHI (voice-over): OK. I'm wearing the budget gear on the left and the high-end gear is on the right. Ski gear is not cheap. The budget pants run $150, the gloves $50. The skis are $300. So the grand total for the budget ski gear is $1,215.

The high-end pants cost $240. And the skis, which include the bindings this time, run $900. Total cost for the high-end gear, $2,485, twice the cost of the budget gear.
