CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Twinkle twinkle lots of stars. The Golden Globes served up the usual peeks at the scantily dressed and officially kicked off Hollywood's awards season.
Daryn Kagan was there for all of it, and she is in L.A. with the highlights.
A fun night -- Daryn.
DARYN KAGAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, I was worried where you were going with that, Carol. Speaking of scantily dressed,...
LIN: Your dress was lovely.
KAGAN: Thank you.
LIN: You know just revealing...
KAGAN: Thank you.
LIN: ... enough to show...
KAGAN: Thank you.
LIN: ... one of our greatest stars at the network, one of our greatest assets. How's that?
KAGAN: One of -- one of our something some. I feel like you were...
LIN: There you go, I'm dancing around.
KAGAN: I feel -- feel you were with me on the red carpet since we were doing the back and forth yesterday.
You know forget Golden Globes, we're going to talk a little bit about it, because, of course, it was Sunday night. This town is already focused on what is happening with the Oscar race, because tomorrow morning very early Oscar nominations will be announced. The tealeaves can be what happened at the Golden Globes, so let's take a look at that.
"Lord of the Rings: Return of the Kings," this is finally the year where it looks like "Lord of the Rings" and Peter Jackson is being rewarded. That movie went four for four in the sweep last night at the Golden Globes, including best director and best drama. Don't forget Golden Globes splits up drama and then musical and comedy. Let's talk about the hot actors. Heading into tomorrow, Charlize Theron winning last night for best actress in a drama for her role as Aileen Wuornos in the movie "Monster." She also is considered almost a shoo-in for a nomination tomorrow and a very strong favorite to win best actress.
And then Sean Penn, he won for his role in "Mystic River" last night for best actor in a drama. He didn't show up. And even though he didn't, and even though Golden Globes tend not to like bad boys, well, he was given the Golden Globe anyway.
The other big news item out here as we head into Oscar nominations tomorrow, Oscar, of course, has been moved up by just about a month. It will be on February 29. Unheard of for the nominations to be coming out two days after Golden Globes, usually there's a 10-day period where Academy voters can still get their ballots in based on what they saw in Golden Globes and just what they haven't seen yet. But everything is smooshed (ph) into one month this year -- Carol.
LIN: All right, how did those dresses look, by the way?
KAGAN: Beautiful. That is one of the most fun things about the red carpet, you get to see the dresses up close. And what reads on television sometimes reads better or worse in person.
I was one of the first to see Nicole Kidman. Some people love it and some people hate it. It was kind of a flapper look. Philip Block, who we had on earlier, the stylist, he said it very well, don't try this at home. Very few people could pull this off, but Nicole Kidman is just -- she just radiates beauty. And she's so tall and statuesque and she definitely made a fashion statement. So is that -- she made a statement.
Sarah Jessica Parker also looked beautiful. She won a Golden Globe for her role in "Sex and the City." And she looked like a little party princess with sparkle and tool.
And then for maternity fashions, boy, this kind of sets the bar, Cate Blanchett, who was nominated for her role in "Veronica Guerin," look at her, she has to be at least six or seven months pregnant. She was draped in this scarlet covered -- she just looked like a goddess with a little bit of the back cut out. She just made it look so simple and so elegant. She was absolutely one of the most beautiful women there last night pregnant or not.
And I also thought Diane Lane in her Bill Blass strapless springy number. Well you can't see much there because you can just see the top, but kind of chiffon. You can kind of -- you see the color of her earrings, that corral, there was kind of a corral floral print thing working there underneath, kind of a knot right at the chest, empire waistline and well, what can you do, how can you mess up Diane -- there you go. There's the dress.
Carol, I think you looked -- you would like that one.
LIN: Yes.
KAGAN: Yes.
LIN: Summer colors are what I love.
KAGAN: Yes.
LIN: A lot of great colors. You had a nice turquoise or aquamarine wrap last night.
KAGAN: Thank you .
LIN: A lovely little item. And you can pick your Oscar gown, and how convenient, you can stay out there for the nominations, as well, and report back here.
KAGAN: Think I actually might have already found it. I did two for one shopping when I was out there earlier this week.
LIN: Thanks, a good use of time. Thanks -- Daryn.
KAGAN: Yes. Sure.
LIN: Well from entertainment cheers to jeers, the dreaded Golden Raspberry Awards. The Beniffer debacle, "Gigli" -- "Gigli", you know nobody saw the movie so how do I know how to pronounce the name, takes nine, count them, nine nominations for Razzies. The film flop was panned by critics and dist (ph) by audiences. Its co-stars Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck called off wedding plans as the film was released.
Right behind "Gigli" or "Gigli" or e-mail us and tell us what you think, "Gigli" says the producer, is "The Cat in the Hat" with eight Razzy nominations. Razzy organizers called Mike Meyers performance a -- quote -- "fur ball hocking desecration."
Co-stars Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz duel for the worst actress dishonor in their latest "Charlie's Angels" installment. And don't expect humble acceptance speeches when the awards are passed out February 28, if they even show up.
