KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Up first this hour, a first in the months-long investigation of highway shootings in and around Columbus, Ohio. Two more shootings yesterday, which police suspect but can't confirm are connected to the others. It occurred in the daytime in front of witnesses. We expect to hear more in a news conference later this hour.
In the meantime, CNN's Jeff Flock brings us up to speed -- Jeff.
JEFF FLOCK, CNN CHICAGO BUREAU CHIEF: And happy to be inside, where this press conference will take place today, in about a half- hour's time, as you report, Kyra. Indeed, we'll hear from the Franklin County sheriffs. And I suspect what we'll get at that time is some information about the ballistics tests that have been done on the evidence that was obtained at the scene yesterday.
I want to take you out there, about 40 miles or so south on Interstate 71. Two separate incidents out there yesterday. One van, a white van, hit by some sort of gunfire. Also, a brown Mercedes also hit at that time. As we said, evidence taken from those scenes now being tested.
Again, just 21 shootings. That's what we're at right now. It could be 23 before we're done.
The other key element that came out of yesterday's, this sighting of what could be a suspect, what could be the person responsible. One of the motorists saw a man described between the ages of 30 and 40. A white male, medium in build, driving a dark colored car. A small car, perhaps a sports car.
Also, that witness indicated that perhaps the man had a handgun as opposed to a long gun. Authorities had had very little to say about a weapon thus far in this case, Kyra. It will be interesting to see if they have anymore to say at this press conference today about a weapon, and also whether any of this information about the potential suspect has fleshed anything out, or flushed anything out I guess is a better word, and stirred anything up as they look for leads.
That's the latest from here, Kyra. And we'll let you know how this press conference turns out.
PHILLIPS: All right. We'll check back in with you. Thanks, Jeff.
