MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: In the gay marriage debate, a well- known celebrity uses her personal life to champion the cause. Rosie O'Donnell is set to marry her longtime girlfriend at San Francisco's City Hall this afternoon.
CNN's Rusty Dornin live there with details.

She was due to arrive by now, right, Rusty? Is she there?

RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Miles, the celebrities have landed as far as we know and are scheduled to arrive here in just about an hour.

And while this seemed very spontaneous, with Rosie O'Donnell coming on "Good Morning America" and announcing her defiance of President Bush's proposal banning gay marriage as a constitutional amendment, it was set up a couple of days ago. Apparently, her partner did call the mayor's office, said they'd like to do it. So they set up a reservation.

All the marriages now are being done by appointment. So they're scheduled to arrive here 1:00 p.m. Pacific, do a little hair and makeup and that sort of thing. And also, just like the common folk, they're going to walk through the county clerk's office and register their license and that sort of thing.

There will be a private ceremony, still a little unclear whether there will be any cameras allowed at that. Then they will come out for a very public statement and a photo-op on the stairs of the rotunda here at City Hall. And while you might think a lot of curiosity seekers might have come out to see all this, only a couple of people have come by and asked me about it. The big crowd, of course, are the cameras that are in the rotunda right now that are awaiting Rosie O'Donnell and Kelli Carpenter to come out after their wedding ceremony -- Miles.

O'BRIEN: CNN's Rusty Dornin in San Francisco, thanks very much.
