MILES O'BRIEN, ANCHOR: This just came in to CNN while we were watching that briefing. Within the past 45, 50 minutes, rather pitched gun battle began in Damascus, right in the heart of Damascus, Syria.
In the area apparently populated by western embassies, a series of explosions were heard and an unidentified group, supposedly as a part of this. The fighting still being heard, according to some of the reports we're getting in from CNN reporters, as well as other wire services.
Hospitals have put out a call for doctors to report to emergency rooms.
Unclear exactly what group is involved in this fighting. We're tracking it very closely for you, however.
Other news around the world to tell you about, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi paid his first visit to Europe in 15 years. Colonel Gadhafi is urging the European Union to normalize diplomatic ties with the former rogue nation.
Israel marking Independence Day, meanwhile. Israelis are celebrating the 56th anniversary of the establishment of their state, amid tight security. Travel bans have been imposed on Palestinians, many of whom are confined to their communities.
Pomp and circumstance in South Africa. President Thabo Mbeki is sworn in for a second term as South Africans joyously celebrate ten years of freedom. Cheers and a standing ovation greeted Nelson Mandela, the country's first black president.
