NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: From around the world, there have been signs of solidarity with Americans. As you know, an outpouring of thoughts and prayers and symbolisms, to show support for what people in this country have been going through. One came today at the Queen of England's official residence.

Libby Weiner with Independent Television News has more now on a break from tradition in London.

LIBBY WEINER, INDEPENDENT TELEVISION NEWS (voice-over): The Changing of the Guard, a pageant normally performed mainly for tourists, was today transformed into a show of support for Britain's most important political ally. The American ambassador to London, William Farish, had been invited to attend the ceremony with the Duke of York.

And in the unprecedented move, it was his country's anthem that was played first. Hundreds of Americans were gathered outside to listen as the Band of the Cold String Guards played the familiar tune. They then stood in silence as a mark of respect to the many thousands killed.

The ambassador, who will meet the queen tonight, was said to be deeply moved by her decision to hold this special ceremony today. Many visitors were also touched.

(on camera): The ceremony today is a powerful symbol of Britain's support for America, the queen's decision to interrupt her holiday and return for a special service in London tomorrow, a sign of the royal family's awareness of the need to be seen to be standing side by side with the United States.

Libby Weiner, ITN, at Buckingham Palace.
