DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Bakersfield, California police believe the mother of a little boy who was found wandering the streets has been in telephone contact with them.
Our Kevin Sites joins us live this morning. He's in Bakersfield with late developments on a little boy who had been known up to now as Mateo. He actually might not be named Mateo after all.
Kevin, hello.
KEVIN SITES, CNN CORRESPONDENT: That's right, Daryn. Daryn, the Bakersfield Police Department are hoping they have a breakthrough, a strong lead that came in the form of a phone call, a voice message left for the lead detective in this case, Herman Caldez (ph).
Now, joining me now is Detective Mary DeGeare. Mary DeGeare is the public information officer for the Bakersfield P.D. And, Mary, can you tell me about a little bit about that voice mail message that was left for Herman Caldez on Friday?
OFC. MARY DEGEARE, BAKERSFIELD POLICE, COMMUNITY RELATIONS: It lasted about a minute. She sounds very distraught. She says her name is Sochi. And she says she's the parent of the boy that we have found, and she's identified him. She's asked Detective Caldez to find him a good home.
SITES: Now why was that that she asked Detective Caldez to find him a good home? Did she give any reasons for that?
(AUDIO GAP)
SITES: The boy's name is not Mateo, as everyone as been calling. His name is Jesus Perez Flores, is that correct?
DEGEARE: That's correct. We initially thought his name was Mateo. That's what he told us his name was.
But with the information she's given us, she seems very credible. She's talked about some of his physical characteristics that someone that didn't know him would not know. And then with a follow-up interview with the boy, he's given us some information that matches what she has said.
So at this point, she's pretty credible and she's our foremost lead.
SITES: And you also said Detective Caldez actually talked with the boy yesterday and there might be some more information?
DEGEARE: He talked to him yesterday, and he gave us some information that makes her even more credible.
SITES: Now you did a records search of the name, Jesus Perez Flores. What have you come up so far?
DEGEARE: We entered his name and her name in local, and state and national databases. And we have got some information back from that inquiry, but I won't be able to discuss that with you right now.
SITES: Thanks very much, detective.
Daryn, so that's what Bakersfield Police Department has right now, a phone call from a woman called Sochi, who identifies the boy, Mateo, as her son. They are searching for her, hoping she will call in again to the Bakersfield P.D.
KAGAN: All right, Kevin Sites in Bakersfield, thank you.
