LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: This morning another fatal shooting in Israel. Gunmen killed an Israeli girl, opening fire on a van with a family of eight inside.
Let's get the details now from CNN's Wolf Blitzer. He is reporting live from Jerusalem - Wolf.
WOLF BLITZER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Thanks very much, Leon. The 7- year-old girl has died. She was in that van with her dad. He's in good condition. A younger sister, a 2-year-old is in serious condition in the hospital. The Israeli military says the shooter came from the West Bank town of Kalkilya, right on the other side of the border between Israel and the West Bank. This car was driving inside Israel in the pre-67 lines of Israel. The Israeli military has gone into that town Kalkilya, imposed a military curfew searching for the gunman or gunmen.
Earlier in the day, the Israelis had arrested the leader of Hamas, the militant Palestinian group, in Kalkilya, but that search continues right now. The search for some sort of ceasefire is also continuing, talks being held, continuing talks in Gaza. The Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas met yesterday with Hamas leaders as well as Palestinian representatives from the other major militant groups including Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade. No breakthrough yet. Though there are some indications they are continuing to make progress. There is also indication that the Israelis are willing to give a little bit on the issue of what they call targeted killings, or the assassination of people they suspect of being engaged in terrorism.
If the Israelis withdraw from a certain amount of Palestinian territory in Gaza, for example, the northern part, and the Palestinian Authority takes charge, the Israelis have now have apparently agreed they won't target militants in that area under the Palestinian Authority control. But instead will give that responsibility in dealing with these kinds of terrorist incidents to the security services of the Palestinian Authority. The bottom line, Leon, it's still not there yet. There is still potential for a lot of trouble. Secretary Colin Powell arrives in this part of the world tomorrow - Leon.
HARRIS: Thank you very much Wolf. Things over there just getting more and more interesting as the hours go by. We'll check back with you later on Wolf in about 45 minutes.
