HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, there's been yet another spike in Israeli/Palestinian tensions this morning. Less than two hours going, an Israeli gunship fired at least four missiles at a car in Gaza city.
CNN's Matthew Chance is piecing together this developing story. He joins us now with the very latest.
Hello to you, Matthew.
MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Heidi, thank you.
And the Israeli armed forces taking another opportunity to strike hard at the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
This attack coming from an Israeli helicopter gunship circling in the skies over the densely populated Gaza Strip, firing at least four rockets in the area, surrounding a car that was driving through those very busy streets.
The car was struck by at least one missile. The other cars that were parked were also struck by missiles that had strayed off their target.
We understand from hospital officials that we've been speaking to that at least one person has been confirmed as dead at this stage, although a number of people have been injured. As many as 25, in fact. Four of them said to be in critical condition.
So there is a possibility of the death toll rising. We're watching that very closely.
Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, has confirmed that the person killed was a member of its military wing, the Izz a-Din el- Kassam Brigade, and they've named him as Zaher Nasser. His death brings to 11 the number of Hamas militants who have been killed in pretty much precisely this way by Israeli helicopter gunships in the skies over Gaza over the course of the past two weeks.
Israel has said that it has no choice but to strike in this way against the Palestinian militants because it says the Palestinian Authority of Yasser Arafat and of Mahmoud Abbas has failed to confront the militants face on, and so it says it will do it to provide further security to the citizens of Israel, and that, as you might expect, has promised terrible revenge on the streets of Israel -- Heidi. COLLINS: Matthew Chance coming to us today.
We appreciate you with all the latest information, Matthew, so very much from Gaza.
