DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Are you ready to be pampered? October's "Travel & Leisure" magazine features a readers' survey on the world's best spas, and we're taking a look today inside our "Getaway" segment.
Nathan Lump is a senior editor for "Travel & Leisure," and joins us in New York this morning.
Nathan, good morning. Thanks for being with us.
NATHAN LUMP, "TRAVEL & LEISURE" MAGAZINE: Good morning.
KAGAN: Before we book the massage and pack our bags, let's just say we're going to some pretty high-brow places here, and if you have to ask how much they are, you probably can't afford to go.
LUMP: No, the world's best spots certainly don't come cheap. Destination spas, you're going be looking at, you know, well in excess of $1,000 for a week, probably closer to $2,000.
But, of course, if you're going a resort, you can get a massage at a resort for slightly more than $100, which of course isn't cheap either. But, you know, would be a way to experience a spa for less.
KAGAN: Well, we can dream a little, and that's what we're going to do this morning.
Let's head to Arizona, Catalina, Arizona. I believe that's near Tucson. These are the top destination spas.
LUMP: Our No. 1 destination was Miraval Life and Balance, a spa in Catalina, which is near Tucson, in the Sonoma Desert -- the Sonora Desert, excuse me. And Miraval really is -- it's the first year that Miraval has come in the No. 1 spot. It was No. 2 last year. So it keeps rising. It does better and better every year. And really, Miraval, like a lot of spas, has an approach to wellness in particular is the focus. So you're doing fitness, you're learning about nutrition, you're also just being pampered with massages or facials, or whatever it is in particular that you like.
Miraval's experience is also particularly spiritual. They do a lot of things that help you get in touch with yourself, who you are. They do things like the equine experience, where you spend time with a horse, and that's supposed to bring out your feelings about yourself and nature, interacting with animals. And it's one of the interesting programs that they have at Miraval.
KAGAN: OK, I'm feeling the horses giving me sore saddle, but let's move on.
WE can be a little bit quicker, the Golden Door (UNINTELLIGIBLE) in Southern California.
LUMP: Sure. Golden Door is also one of the -- consistently one of the top three. It's a little bit more Asian in feel, a little bit smaller, so it has more intimate feel than some of the other spas. Interestingly enough, Golden Door really has branched out a lot. You'll see Golden Door spas now at various resorts around the country. So that's another way for people to experience the Golden Door if you don't want to go for a full program for a week so.
KAGAN: OK, let's head back to Tucson, to Canyon Ranch. Those folks probably disappointed they're not only No. 1 in the country, but not No. 1 in Tucson.
LUMP: Right. Canyon Ranch is still a terrific spa. They've been No. 1 in the past. Two years ago, they were No. 1, and they were for many years. Canyon Ranch is really a trend-setting spa. It's still incredibly popular with our readers. They do well across the board. They have an incredible range of treatments. They really, if you want to go for fitness, that's a great option. If you want to go just to be pampered, they have a lot of choice for their guests, which is an interesting part of their program.
KAGAN: And quickly, a top hotel spa, we go to Hawaii and the Four Seasons for that one.
LUMP: The Four Seasons Hualalui on the big island is our No. 1 hotel spa this year, as they were last year. It's a terrific spa really in terms of range of choice. It's obviously a great setting. People love Hawaii. Right near the beach.
But really, what sets Hualalui apart from many of its competitors is just the range of options. You name it, they've got it, in terms of treatment. So whether you want a massage or a wrap or all kinds of different things, things using indigenous treatments, they have all of that there for you.
KAGAN: And finally, if it's not enough to keep it in the states, head to Bali.
LUMP: Head to Bali. You know, Bali, Americans haven't been going to Bali as much lately, but our readers still continue to go and continue to love it. The Four Seasons resort Bali at Gengron (ph) Bay was our No. 1 resort spa internationally this year. It's obviously an incredible setting. The ambience is there is terrific, in terms of it just being completely serene, incorporated with nature, and of course they also have a great range of treatments. Four Seasons does spas very, very well.
KAGAN: I feel even more cleansed just talking about it for the last couple of minutes.
Nathan, thank you for that, Nathan Lump with "Travel & Leisure." Appreciate the tour of the spas. TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com
