FRANK BUCKLEY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: And joining us now live is former Mayor Dick Riordan, former mayor of Los Angeles, is going to be the education secretary in Governor Schwarzenegger's cabinet. We just heard Herb Wesson saying that Governor Schwarzenegger will have to bring Republicans closer to the center.
You are a person identified with the center. How difficult will that challenge be?

RICHARD RIORDAN, SCHWARZENEGGER ADVISER: I think it won't be difficult at all. I think it -- people are ready for change right now. And what they know is that we are in moral and economic shambles in this state, and we need solutions that are going to reach out to everybody.

BUCKLEY: Is there -- as we look back here at the stage and we're waiting for governor-elect Schwarzenegger to be sworn in, there were some who thought you might be the guy up here. And you were telling me you were surprised up to the last moment about Arnold Schwarzenegger announcing.

RIORDAN: Well, I was. I had encouraged Arnold every day for several weeks to run, and he kept saying he wasn't going to run, and then he announced he was. So it surprised me, but very pleasantly surprised me, because I think he is exactly the right person for this job.

BUCKLEY: All right. Dick Riordan, education secretary for Arnold Schwarzenegger, thanks very much, former mayor of Los Angeles, who will a be part of the Schwarzenegger cabinet -- Daryn.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: The former mayor there that you have with you, Frank, certainly knows the challenges of governing in a difficult situation like Los Angeles. Does he have any advice for the new governor?

BUCKLEY: Daryn Kagan asked a question. Do you have any advice for the new governor?

RIORDAN: No, the advice I have for -- OK, the advice I have for Arnold Schwarzenegger is to keep doing what he's doing -- reach out to the Republicans, to the Democrats, draw in the people throughout the state to solve our problems. It has to be governance in a nonpartisan way.

BUCKLEY: OK, there you have it, Daryn, the advice from the former mayor. KAGAN: Thank you so much to you and to the former mayor, new education secretary of California. Thank you, Frank.
