DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: The situation in Haiti continues to grow more and more uncertain as rebels continue their advances. There is late word this morning that American troops will be sent to the U.S. embassy in Port-au-Prince to help shore up security.
Lucia Newman joins us now. She has a live report from Port-Au- Prince.

Lucia, hello.

LUCIA NEWMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Daryn.

Indeed, We understand some 50 Marines are coming here to Haiti to help prop up security at the U.S. embassy here, this on the request of the U.S. ambassador to Haiti. In the meantime, rebels continue to be in control of Tatitian (ph), the country's second largest city.

Last night, the rebel leader, Gisileef (ph), the former police chief of Tatitian, says that he would come through this capital, he would take Port-au-Prince within the next two weeks. President Aristide, meantime, has said that he is sending reinforcements to the capital. to Tatitian, to try to retake control of that city, but so far there is no sign of them.

KAGAN: Maria, what can you tell us about this 5:00 p.m. deadline for either side to accept this compromise?

NEWMAN: Daryn, the international community sent that a very high-level delegation over the weekend here to Haiti. It's put forth a power-sharing proposal to the president and to the opposition. The president said he accepted the opposition, and said that nothing short of the president's resignation will do. They have until 5:00 p.m. today to decide whether or not they could even consider the proposal. But I must tell you, it does not look good, Daryn.

KAGAN: Lucia Newman, in Port-au-Prince, in Haiti, thank you for the latest from there.
