MICHAEL OKWU, CNN CORRESPONDENT: That's right. In the movie "Someone Like You," Ashley Judd plays alongside two guys, who not so long ago may have seemed unlikely candidates for a romantic comedy. Australian actor Hugh Jackman had action hero written all over him after last summer's blockbuster "X-Men," and Greg Kinnear, well, he was a TV talk show host.

As CNN's Lauren Hunter reports, Kinnear and Jackman are putting their skills to work in the new film.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

LAUREN HUNTER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Forget office politics. In "Someone Like You," office romance is the minefield for Ashley Judd, with one philandering coworker she disdains.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "SOMEONE LIKE YOU")

HUGH JACKMAN, ACTOR: You left these earrings in my bathroom.

ASHLEY JUDD, ACTRESS: You don't waste any time, do you?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HUNTER: And one co-worker she falls for who breaks her heart.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "SOMEONE LIKE YOU")

GREG KINNEAR, ACTOR: Jane.

JUDD: Yes?

KINNEAR: It's over, Jane.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

KINNEAR: That's kind of the appeal of this story is this woman, Ashley Judd, is trying to discover some sort of answer and theory to all of this heartache, and the fact of the matter is, there is no answer. It's just kind of tough. Sucks when it doesn't work.

HUNTER: What does work is the chemistry of the film's co-stars. Though here he plays the romantic heavy, Kinnear says he's had plenty of experience on the other side of love gone sour. KINNEAR: Oh, I got a list. Let me tell you. You want to see the list of receiving end blows that I've taken over the years? I got one.

HUNTER: The setting for "Someone Like You" is a fictional TV talk show, a venue familiar to Kinnear.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "LATER WITH GREG KINNEAR")

KINNEAR: You're my favorite kind of audience, easily excitable.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

KINNEAR: I was having all sorts of talk show flashbacks. I guess that's years of doing that helped out a little bit in this. It was just a miracle for me that anybody would actually show up and sit down and talk for half an hour.

HUNTER: Hugh Jackman's route to the set was slightly different.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "X-MEN")

JACKMAN: Fight with you? Join the team? Be an x-man? Who the hell do you think you are? You're a mutant.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HUNTER: The Aussie actor's first foray into American film making was last year's "X-Men," but he was known for his work in musical theater. Jackman had just wrapped "Oklahoma" on the London stage when he auditioned, in song, for the producer of "Someone Like You."

JACKMAN: She kind of sat like this. And then in the end, she said, "I didn't really mean for you to sing." and I said, "Well, you asked me to sing." She said, "Well, but I didn't think you would." I thought people down the hallway are going to be going, this guy's trying way too hard. You don't start singing at an audition, man.

HUNTER: He got the part, so does he get the girl? We'll never tell.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

KINNEAR: Maybe that's why we hold on as hard as we do. We just can't believe that such a miracle can ever happen to us twice. Someday, you'll find it again
