LINDA STOUFFER, CNN ANCHOR: The many roles of Patty Hearst are the focus this weekend on "PEOPLE IN THE NEWS."

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: The lady who normally sits in that chair -- Daryn Kagan -- hosts that new show.

And she gives us a quick look at the highlights.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR (voice-over): Patty Hearst has played many roles in her 47 years. First, she was an heiress. In the early 70s, she grabbed the world's attention as a kidnap victim.

PATTY HEARST: Blindfolded, gagged, tied up.

KAGAN: Eventually, Hearst joined her kidnappers -- they say, voluntarily -- she claimed she was brainwashed.

After a series of headline-grabbing events that included bank robberies and shoot-outs, the police caught up with Patty Hearst. She soon assumed the role of convicted felon.

After prison, she took turns as an author, and even as an actress, a favorite of director John Waters.

JOHN WATERS, FILM DIRECTOR: I think she's a good comedian,

KAGAN: And now Hearst has been asked to play a role for the government: as a witness in the upcoming trial of Kathy Soliah.

ERIN CHEMERINSKY, LAW PROFESSOR: A lot is going to depend on this group of jurors and whether they know of Patty Hearst, and what they remember about her.

KAGAN: The life and trials of Patricia Hearst -- this week on CNN's "PEOPLE IN THE NEWS." Watch Sunday night at 8:30 Eastern.
