NANCY NEWMAN, CNN ANCHOR: Not only is it the oldest trophy awarded of the four major North American sports, but it is also the most experienced: Famous are the Stanley Cup excursions. "Stan," as he's called by his close friends, has tagged along in plenty of celebrations in his -- or its -- lifetime. Some of the stories go from ventures to Russia, to being left behind in taxi cabs.
Here now is a day in the life of Sir Stanley Cup and friend.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Let's do it.
PAUL OKE, KEEPER OF THE STANLEY CUP: All right, let's rock.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Is that the real thing?
OKE: That's the real thing.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, man. What are you doing with it?
OKE: I'm the guy that looks after it.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You don't look like you play hockey.
OKE: I don't. I work for the Hockey Hall of Fame.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Wow, that's something. It's beautiful.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I wonder how much beer was poured in that. That's beautiful.
OKE: I talk to it. Not that I'm going crazy, or anything, but I say, Hey, Stan, what's going on. People are kind of just shocked at the way I talk -- short-form "Stan" -- figure we'd be on a short-name basis, seeing that we hang out so much together.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Over the years a lot of wonderful people -- just recently, Kim Delaney from NYPD Blue, way back when, Liberace -- a lot of people over the years.
OKE: And now the Stanley Cup.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And now the Stanley Cup. OKE: Which one's prettier, Kim Delaney or the Stanley Cup?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Kim, forgive me: I'm going to have to go with the Stanley Cup. It's a different kind of pretty.
OKE: Want to give it a little kiss.
I kind of wonder how the Mona Lisa did this. .
I've been to Tokyo with it, to Stockholm, Sweden, with it, New York City, the Bahamas. I got a really cool picture with the Stanley Cup lying in a sun chair, and Stanley's in one chair, and I'm in the other, lying back, the hardest working guy in hockey.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
NEWMAN: If that is not enough to make the Mr. Lombardi Trophy extremely jealous.
