DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Now on to international news. Police in Nepal have fired tear gas and implemented a curfew in order to reign in thousands of young demonstrators. The South Asian country has been in political upheaval since its former crown prince allegedly shot and killed eight members of his own family before turning the gun on himself. His death earlier today ushered in a new king, the country's third ruler in four days.
Correspondent Kasra Naji joining us on the phone now with the latest -- Kasra?
KASRA NAJI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes. As we speak, a quiet funeral is underway here in Kathmandu for the Crown Prince Dipendra who died earlier today. It's quiet because the funeral is being held in the middle of this curfew which was imposed a few hours ago after a day of running battles between the police and the demonstrators. The demonstrators are angry. They suspect a conspiracy to wipe out the royal family. They want the full story and they want those people responsible for this to be put to justice.
As you said earlier on, authorities have, in fact, declared the crown price dead after two days. He was in a coma in a hospital for two days and this morning they announced that he had, in fact, died of his injuries and hurriedly afterwards the authorities enthroned the Crown Prince Gyanendra, who is a cousin of the crown prince, as the country's next king. And -- but many demonstrators on the streets didn't say they didn't accept it. They wanted to know first the full story before they say they are prepared to accept the king. Many on the streets were calling for his resignation today -- Daryn?
KAGAN: Kasra Naji reporting to us from Kathmandu, thank you. More on that story for just a bit. First, though, we have news coming out of Washington.
