ANNOUNCER: Irene Stidman of Kansas City, Missouri asks: I was wondering, which seats in the Senate and House of Representatives were up for grabs next year?

KATE SNOW, CNN CONGRESSIONAL CORRESPONDENT: About a third of the U.S. Senate will be up for reelection in the year 2002. That's 34 senators, to be exact. Each of them runs every six years but they don't all run in the same given year. Of those 34, 20 are Republicans, 14 are Democrats. Over on the House side, every single seat will be up for grabs next year, that's 435 seats.

The breakdown there is 221 Republicans, 210 Democrats, along with two independents and there are two vacancies right now that'll have to be filled in a special election. In both the House and the Senate, the division is so close between the two parties that they're already focusing efforts on these elections, focusing a lot of money to try to make sure their party wins the majority.
