DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Some of your favorite television shows get Emmy nods and a Big Brother housemate is kicked out of the big house.
STEPHEN FRAZIER, CNN ANCHOR: Oh, well, CNN's Michael Okwu has more on all of that from New York in our "Showbiz Today" report.
KAGAN: Hi, Michael.
FRAZIER: Michael.
MICHAEL OKWU, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Daryn. Good morning, Stephen.
Yes, an exciting day in entertainment news today. It was a very early wakeup call, but a welcome one for some of television's stars this morning. The Emmy award nominations were announced earlier today in Los Angeles.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
PATRICIA HEATON, "EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND": The nominations in the drama series category are "E.R.", "Law and Order," "The Practice," "The Sopranos," "The West Wing."
(END VIDEO CLIP)
OKWU: "The Sopranos" made a killing today, picking up 22 nominations, including best drama. Both announcer Sean Hayes of "Will & Grace" and Patricia Heaton of "Everybody Loves Raymond" were also awarded with nominations. "Everybody Loves Raymond" was also nominated in the best comedy category along with "Frasier," "Malcolm In the Middle," "Sex and the City" and last year's winner, "Will & Grace."
In the lead actor category, Andre Braugher from "Gideon's Crossing," Dennis Franz from "NYPD Blue," James Gandolfini of "The Sopranos" and Rob Lowe and Martin Sheen from "The West Wing."
In the lead actress from a drama category, "Soprano's" shrink, Lorraine Bracco, "Judging Amy's" Amy Brenneman, "Soprano's" wife Edie Falco, Marg Helgenberger from "CSI" and Sela Ward from "Once and Again." And in the lead actress from a comedy series category, Calista Flockhart of "Ally McBeal," "Malcolm In the Middle's" mom, Jane Kaczmarek, "Sex and the City's" Sarah Jessica Parker and "Everybody Loves Raymond's" Patricia Heaton.
"Raymond's" Ray Romano was nominated for lead actor in a comedy, as was "Frasier's" Kelsey Grammer, surprise, surprise. "Third Rock from the Sun's" high commander John Lithgow, "Will & Grace's" Will, Eric McCormack and Frankie Muniz from "Malcolm In the Middle."
Winners will be announced September 16 in Los Angeles.
While the show "Survivor" earned an Emmy nod this morning in the new reality programming category, the reality show "Big Brother" is in the news today for an entirely other reason. Justin, a contestant on the CBS game show, has been sent packing for pulling a knife on housemate Krista. According to CBS, the two were kissing when Justin grabbed a knife and held it to her throat. The producers say Justin crossed the line and has to go. The producers also say it's not a stunt to hype the program's sagging ratings. We'll see about that. There's no word if the incident will be shown on the program, which airs tonight.
Stay tuned throughout the day for more Emmy reactions, including a live chat with Uncle Junior. You know who he is, nominated for best appointing actor, Dominick Chianese will join us live. That's during our next "Showbiz Today" report in the 11:00 hour.
Until then, I'm Michael Okwu in New York.
