ANNOUNCER: Charles Coe from Mesa, Arizona asks: Is there a significant difference between brands of gasoline?
CLARK HOWARD, CONSUMER ADVOCATE: Charles, you've hit one of my favorite hot buttons. So many of us waste so much money buying gasoline. And the truth is, gas is gas, because in each state, the quality of the gas that you get at the station is regulated by the state.
Don't believe any of that advertising junk about gasoline. Buy it where you can get it the cheapest. And what's neat is there are all kinds of new outlets where you can get gas at a great deal. First, the warehouse clubs, Sam's, Costco, and BJ's, are adding gas pumps. Plus, Wal-Mart has been rolling out pumps across the country. So go to those spots. You might save 15, 20 cents a gallon.
You know something else? Don't buy premium gas for your car if it only needs regular. If you think that you are helping your car, you're not. Check your owner's manual. If it says to buy regular unleaded, that's what you buy.
