COLLEEN MCEDWARDS, CNN ANCHOR: Time now for our "Showbiz Today" extra, a little bit -- a look at what's happening in the world of entertainment.
LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: It's going to be a bit of a surprise for us.
Let's check and see what Laurin Sydney's...
MCEDWARDS: What do you got, Laurin?
HARRIS: ... got for us this morning -- Laurin.
MCEDWARDS: (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
LAURIN SYDNEY, CNN ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT: OK, are you ready? Are you ready?
MCEDWARDS: We're ready.
SYDNEY: Colleen and Leon, Mariah Carey will be a no-show for her primetime interview with Barbara Walters. Carey, who was hospitalized last month for exhaustion, has postponed next week's interview. Her publicist says that the chat was canceled because Carey is continuing to recover from exhaustion and needs more time to rest.
Walters said in a statement that she was, quote: "concerned to hear that Ms. Carey would be unable to do the interview at this time, and we wish her well."
Mariah had planned to discuss her recent emotional problems and her new film and her new album.
Mark Wahlberg was discussing his latest film "Rock Star" last night in Los Angeles. The rapper-turned actor plays a wanna-be rocker who becomes lead singer of the band he idolizes. Wahlberg was joined by a handful of real-life rock stars and his on-screen love interest, Jennifer Aniston.
And even with his musical background, Wahlberg didn't get the support he expected when deciding if he should take the part.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) MARK WAHLBERG, ACTOR: Well, I thought it was really challenging because when I mentioned to a couple of my friends who are familiar with my music background they laughed, and they said I could never pull it off. So I said, OK, well, this is what I'm going to do, you know. It was like they made the decision for me. I don't like being told I can't do something.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
SYDNEY: Hector Elizondo doesn't play a rock star in his latest film, and that is just OK with him. The actor is staring in the indie film "Tortilla Soup," and he can also be seen in the surprise Disney hit "The Princess Diaries."
CNN's Bill Tush shared some chips and dips with the actor and chatted about his two roles.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
BILL TUSH, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Give Hector Elizondo a script and he can make any character his own, and being a master dialection certainly comes in handy.
HECTOR ELIZONDO, ACTOR: Being able to manage different accents I've been able to play many nationalities. Plus, the fact that I have a malleable puss. You know, I really look like Lenin, you know, Russian. That's why I play so many Russians many times. I played Russian -- I love doing Russian accent because it's something really very delicious, it's something -- I love talking with the (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
TUSH: This time out he's a loving Mexican-American widower in the film titled "Tortilla Soup."
We talked to him about his role in New York's Tortilla Flats.
ELIZONDO: He's a chef, you know, a world renowned chef. He's raised his three daughters alone. His wife died 15 years ago. He's still mourning her death, and so he's in state of crisis. He's losing his sense of smell and sense of taste, not a good thing for a chef, especially of his caliber, and he's losing his daughters, for a variety of reasons, all natural. They want to leave and lead their own lives.
TUSH: Elizondo goes from chef to chauffeur with his other current release, Disney's G-rated hit, "The Princess Diaries."
But as Joseph, he provides more than one service to Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse Renaldi.
ELIZONDO: Joseph and the queen, a very, very friendly relationship.
TUSH: Yes, you do get the feeling there's something going on.
ELIZONDO: Well, yes, of course. You see the way we talk and the way we dance. And at the end of the movie I tell a guy to leave and we hold hands and we're going around the corner. You know?
TUSH: "The Princess Diaries" marks another collaboration with director Garry Marshall, who always seems to work Elizondo into his films.
ELIZONDO: Can you give me a day or two? I said maybe a half a day. All right, then, you walk (UNINTELLIGIBLE). Or he'll says, "what's your time like here?" I say, well, I have three weeks here. He says, "good, three weeks, we can figure something." Well, send me the script. He says, "figure it out."
TUSH: And it all started more than 20 years ago when the actor accidentally clipped the director during a pickup basketball game.
ELIZONDO: He's on one knee and he goes (UNINTELLIGIBLE). I said, yes. I said, man, does this guy going to get cranky at me or something? He says, "you're a terrific actor. You're a lousy passer. I think I got a movie for you." Nothing connected. Then we started laughing and one thing led to another and we did -- I think it's still our favorite movie, it's "Young Doctors in Love."
TUSH: Sometimes you never know what will be the recipe for success.
Bill Tush, CNN entertainment news, New York.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
SYDNEY: And from jazz to funky rock, Nikka Costa is up for best new artist at tomorrow night's MTV Music Video Awards. The sexy singer will join us live during our next SHOWBIZ TODAY report. That is at 11:35 a.m. Eastern.
Until then I'm Laurin Sydney in New York, and now it's back to Leon and Colleen in Atlanta.
I'm so sorry, Colleen.
MCEDWARDS: Thanks very much, Laurin.
HARRIS: Thanks, Laurin
MCEDWARDS: That's not a problem at all.
