LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Britney, her snake and not much else -- the MTV Music Video Awards last night.

JEANNE MESERVE, CNN ANCHOR: And I know you don't want to forget your favorite, the king of pop himself.

CNN's Laurin Sydney joins us from New York with our "Showbiz Today Report" to tell us all about that and much more, I'm sure.

Hi Laurin.

HARRIS: Hey Laurin.

LAURIN SYDNEY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: That's right, Michael without a snake. But after tonight, who knows.

This is a big, big week for the music industry in New York City. Last night the MTV Music Video Awards rocked the house, and tonight Michael Jackson performs his first concert in over a decade.

CNN's Bill Tush is outside of Madison Square Garden, where Jackson will be joined by many of music's familiar faces tonight as they set up for the big festivities.

Bill, it's 10 hours and counting; what do you have so far?

BILL TUSH, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, I'll tell you, we were here at 8:30 this morning, there was absolutely nobody here except for the commuters that come and go out of Penn Station. But now finally, some things are happening. We've got a group of people over here with limos that have been coming up, and a lot of security guys. And I don't know who's arrived -- nobody that I recognize, so I guess it's all backup people.

And they're going to put the red carpet over here later tonight. I'm surprised they haven't started doing this already. They normally start, you know, laying that down and fixing it all up early in the day. But that's where all the stars will be arriving tonight. We'll be out there for the arrivals.

And you mentioned some of the familiar faces that will be here, but there are so many names on a list -- I've got a list of names of people that are invited to attend this thing tonight, and there are so many people you just wouldn't associate with Michael Jackson. William Shatner; maybe he'll get up there and sing with him. Cliff Robertson is supposed to be here. David Hasselhoff might show up. It's a star- studded list.

But who is playing? That's the most important thing. You're going to have Marc Anthony; you're going to have Britney Spears and all kinds of stuff. And there's a fire truck over there in case Michael's hair catches on fire again. My cameraman said that; that was his joke, and I'm only kidding.

And Laurin, back to you.

SYDNEY: Thank you, Bill, you've covered it all more than we could ever have imagined.

OK, Michael Jackson made a surprise appearance at the MTV Music Video Awards last night. He joined the boys of pop, 'NSync, as they performed their brand new single. Britney Spears, as Leon says, was joined by a new friend during her scantily-clad number as well. She danced with a live snake on stage.

But the real story of the evening was the winners. That and, of course, what they wore.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, 'NSYNC: I'm just going to say you don't want to miss our performance. That is no lie. You don't want to miss it.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I heard a rumor he's performing tonight.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Is that true? That would be amazing!

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: 'NSync is just racking up, man. They have received four awards already.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I think we had no idea we were going to win this.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I think Fatboy Slim was robbed.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And the winner for best direction video award is: Fatboy Slim.

QUESTION: You just won?

ALICIA KEYS, SINGER: Best new artist.

QUESTION: How does it feel?

KEYS: It feels wonderful. I'm so happy.

JAMIE FOXX, HOST, MTV MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS: Highlights of the night is Alicia Keys, most definitely. I think the tribute to Aaliyah was incredible.

JANET JACKSON, SINGER: And as I listened to Aaliyah, I was very touched by her sincerity, by her strength and her love.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We're going to keep Aaliyah's legacy alive. I didn't write anything, I just felt like I had to come from the heart. And I love you Aaliyah, and you're forever missed.

MICK JAGGER, MUSICIAN: The video of the year goes to "Lady Marmalade," Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim...

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALES: Moby featuring Gwen Stefani, "Southside."

WILL SMITH, ACTOR: And the award goes to: Eve featuring Gwen Stefani.

UNIDENTIFIED MALES: Outkast.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Destiny's Child for "Survivor."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The 2001 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award to the fabulous U2.

THE EDGE, U2: The unwritten rule that we have amongst all of us is that if it ever starts to lose that quality, we just call it a day. So I think we're still making our best records. That's why we're still here.

FOXX: That's the show. Good night. It's over. Peace.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

SYDNEY: Now, it's going to take a thriller of a performance for the King of Pop to top that tonight. Our Bill Tush will be outside of the theater all day long, bringing us the latest on Jackson's return to the live stage, so please stick around.

And now let us go back to Leon and Jeanne. And it's good to see two people dressed on television; thank you.

MESERVE: Always try to be dressed on television.

HARRIS: There you go.
