PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: First though let's turn to Bill Hemmer who continues to stand by at CNN Center in Atlanta for a War Alert (INAUDIBLE) Bill.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Hey Paula, good morning again. With the threat of a ground defensive, the final Taliban stronghold taking a beating now on the ground. American warplanes continue to bomb Taliban positions in and around the city of Kandahar.

NIC ROBERTSON, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Our sources in Kandahar say it has been intense bombardment again on the city, this for the third day. They say the targets have been a core commander's compound in the center of the city and Mullah Mohammed Omar's compound on the northern edge. His compound overlooks the city. It had been left alone in bombing raids earlier in the bombing campaigns, but now apparently that, too, is a target.

Our sources also tell us that the Taliban have rounded up another three or four people in the city they accuse of spying. In recent days they had hanged a man that they had accused of spying for the United States inside the city. The Taliban have also ventured on a campaign of burning musical CDs and musical tapes in the city stadium -- now this in the past has been done by the hard line religious police.

During the bombing campaign, they had taken their pressure off the people by easing off on some of the Taliban's hard line restrictions, now apparently putting those restrictions back on. Our sources inside the city there say they have not heard any gunfire in the city. This an indication, they say, that so far tribal forces that are close to the city have not yet entered it.
