ROY MARCUS, KTTV REPORTER (voice-over): They may have those mean old walking blues before it's all done. Josh Kampf and Bill Faria left Santa Monica for a walk, a walk across the U.S., all the way to New York, two college buddies who decided to honor the victims of 9-11 by carrying 4,000 mini-American flags from coast to coast. They hope to arrive in the Big Apple by September 11th of this year.
BILL FARIA: We're going make that pretty the focus of our life over the next seven and a half months, is to make it there on time. We really feel that the only way that we wouldn't get there is some kind of injury.
JOSH KAMPF: We didn't have much money to give, and this is kind of what we came up with. Bill came up with the idea of walking across the country in honor of September 11th victims.
MARCUS: Josh and Bill were living in Boulder, Colorado at the time. Bill quit his job at a biotech firm and the two men drove to California, stopping along the way to bury food and water to pick up later along the walk. The first stash is in Barstow.
FARIA: They're like little meals, and you tear the top and pour in some boiling water, and it turns into turkey tetrazinni (ph).
MARCUS: They are hoping people join them at different intervals along the walk to share a couple of miles. If you'd like to join in, chart their progress, or make a donation, log on to www.walk- foramerica.org for updates.
