PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: Winning a Golden Globe may not mean as much to an actor or moviemaker as winning the prestigious Oscar, but CNN's Anne McDermott reports, the party at the Golden Globe Awards is not to be missed.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
ANNE MCDERMOTT, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): That's a happy camper. Here's another. And another. What makes 'em happy? Well, they're rich, and famous and getting awards. Welcome to the Golden Globes. You know, the wacky little nephew of elegant uncle Oscar.
How wacky? Well...
RED SKELETON: I broke it already.
MCDERMOTT: Don't worry, Red Skeleton, Lord Larry did the exact same thing, but nobody cared, because he's a star! And stars are what the Golden Globes are all about. It's true today, just as it was true yesterday.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Miss Jayne Mansfield.
MCDERMOTT: The stars have fun here, maybe because at the Golden Globes, they serve food and drink? But sometimes, the awards themselves don't get no respect, not even from the winners.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Actually I thought it was a little bit bigger than this.
MCDERMOTT: Well, maybe part of that's because there is so darn many award ceremonies, and maybe part of that goes back to this film, "Butterfly."
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
PIA ZADORA, ACTRESS: Jess, I'm your daughter and I got nowhere to go.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
MCDERMOTT: Back in 1981, "Butterfly" earned Pia Zadora a golden globe for best new star of the year. Critics, shall we say, disagreed with the choice. BOB THOMAS, AF ENTERTAINMENT: When I heard the name Pia Zadora uttered from the podium, I think the whole ballroom was in shock.
MCDERMOTT: It was widely believed that Zadora's very rich husband may have had a wee bit of influence with the judges, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
But the current association president disputes that, saying Pia's problem was a bad movie.
DAGMAR DUNLEAVY, HOLLYWOOD FOREIGN PRESS ASSN.: But again, it's art. It's open to interpretation. What's a stinker to you might now be one to me.
MCDERMOTT: The current nominees? They include Sissy Spacek, Kevin Spacey, Hugh Jackman, Gene Hackman, Will Smith, Maggie Smith, Martin Sheen, Charlie Sheen, and a gazillion others, because the Golden Globes gives out awards for movies and TV. And most of those people will show up, because the stars can cut loose, as a loose Bruce Willis demonstrated many, many hairs ago.
BRUCE WILLIS, ACTOR: I'd like to thank my mom and dad for fooling around 32 years ago.
MCDERMOTT: Anne McDermott, CNN, Los Angeles.
