THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
JACK CAFFERTY, CNN ANCHOR: All right, pardon me, time to take a look at a couple of other stories including ...
ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Is it time for the Buzz?
CAFFERTY: It is as a matter of fact. Time ...
PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: It is the Buzz.
CAFFERTY: It's time now to buzz. Another very large corporate bankruptcy, talking about Global Crossing. This telecom company that had visions of building a worldwide high-speed Internet network. They invested $15 billion, didn't work. They've gone belly-up. The stock is off 99 percent. According to the Drudge Report, there are all kinds of juicy little sidebars to this.
The Drudge Report says that Terry McAuliffe ...
COOPER: Head of the DNC.
CAFFERTY: Yes, the head of the Democratic National Committee, had $100,000 investment in Global Crossing stock, it went to 18 million ...
COOPER: Wow.
CAFFERTY: ... then he got out, according to the Drudge Report - good thing. The head of the company - president of the company, a guy named Gary Winnick, took 750 million out of Global Crossing, and now the stock is off 99 percent and ...
COOPER: Did the - did the company ever make a profit?
CAFFERTY: No, never did. It was a very expensive prospect, trying to build this global network, and you know, $15 billion down the drain and ...
ZAHN: Is there any suggesting of wrongdoing?
CAFFERTY: Well not yet.
ZAHN: You know I was actually speaking with an attorney ...
COOPER: Hey, give Jack some time ... ZAHN: ... who ...
COOPER: ... he'll come up with something.
ZAHN: ... last night he was involved with some of the auditing procedures that will be part of this Enron investigation, and I guess they have these forensic auditors that will go in and look at all these records at Enron, and he ...
CAFFERTY: Right.
ZAHN: ... said we may not know for three to four months ...
CAFFERTY: Wow.
ZAHN: ... whether there was anything.
CAFFERTY: Forensic auditor.
(CROSSTALK)
ZAHN: That's what they call him. I said what does a forensic auditor do, you know.
CAFFERTY: He applies death (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
ZAHN: They are very well trained. Some of them having done work in the FBI, and they know exactly where to look in the documents and ...
COOPER: To see if they can piece together shredded information (UNINTELLIGIBLE). Interesting, a poll -- USA Today/CNN poll about John Walker Lindh. Sixty percent disagree with the Justice Department's decision not to give him the death penalty. Thirty-three percent agree with charges that could send him to prison for life.
ZAHN: So apparently unmoved by what ...
COOPER: Yes.
ZAHN: ... his parents had to say and his defense attorney.
COOPER: What's interesting to me on the story is that it's sort of gone the opposite to the way public opinion often goes. You know often when a story breaks, there's a rush to judgment, and then as evidence comes out, people sort of soften their position. This has gone the reverse. When the (UNINTELLIGIBLE) story - when people first discovered him, there was sort of this - a lot of people on the fence kind of not sure how they should feel about him. Then, as the evidence has emerged, you know, more and more people are just saying you know ...
ZAHN: Yes ...
COOPER: ... what was this guy up to? ZAHN: I think because the CNN Exclusive interview came out where he talked about why he got involved, and then, of course, his father immediately came out and said I believe my son's a good boy ...
COOPER: Right.
ZAHN: ... he was brainwashed.
COOPER: Right.
ZAHN: So.
COOPER: Yes, and now you know ...
ZAHN: It may be why people are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt ...
COOPER: Benefit of the doubt, yes.
ZAHN: ... for about a day.
COOPER: And then like a couple of days ago, you know, there was - he had discarded his passport. The letters from his family had been discarded. So ...
CAFFERTY: Underestimating too the depth of the anger of the American people of what happened September 11. I mean this country got very, very angry about that, and the anger hasn't gone away. It's not ...
ZAHN: Yes the country woke up.
CAFFERTY: Yes. I mean (UNINTELLIGIBLE) slow to anger, but when you get this country upset, watch out, and then you know people are - people are very angry.
ZAHN: How about that Starbucks ...
(CROSSTALK)
COOPER: Yes, talking about people are angry. A jury got pretty angry at Starbucks. They awarded $3.5 million to a woman who got her hand burned, apparently disfigured.
ZAHN: Where was this, during a demonstration of a cappuccino machine ...
COOPER: Right, they were - she wanted ...
(CROSSTALK)
COOPER: She was checking out the cappuccino machine, someone's demonstrating it, it apparently blew up. Coffee grounds went everywhere. Her hand got burned - 3.5 million.
ZAHN: Now I had read in one account that she didn't follow the medical procedures to treat her burns. I saw that a couple of places.
(CROSSTALK)
COOPER: Well apparently the jury ...
ZAHN: That didn't mean a whole lot to the jury if that was true.
COOPER: Well apparently the award was actually bigger originally from the jury, and it was lessened because they said she was about 25 percent responsible for what happened to her. So ...
ZAHN: Maybe the message is ...
COOPER: ... there you go.
ZAHN: ... you stick to the homegrown kind.
(CROSSTALK)
ZAHN: Your own little machine that you know how to operate.
COOPER: Or just you know get a smaller - don't get that double grand latte frosty mug.
CAFFERTY: The $9 coffee.
COOPER: That's right. That's right.
All right that's it for this hour's Buzz. It went by so fast, didn't it?
We'll be back with more ...
(CROSSTALK)
COOPER: ... Buzz in the 9:00 a.m. hour. You can send us your questions or comments or anything you'd like. We'll read them, get back to you tomorrow if we can. The address is am@cnn.com.
