FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: Well, the 74th annual Academy Awards ceremony is this Sunday, and for the fashion conscious, perhaps just as important as who walks across the stage with an Oscar is how they look. And while many of us will be focusing on what the big stars are wearing, from the neck down a lot of preparation is going on into what they'll be wearing above the neck.
CNN's Daryn Kagan is covering the Oscars and she joins us now from L'Ermitage on Beverly Hills, kind of the makeover mall for all the stars and the star wannabes, right?
DARYN KAGAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes. And, Fredricka, you might wonder why I'm looking like this this morning, not a stitch of makeup on this face this morning. I'll tell you why I was so brave.
WHITFIELD: Because we're talking makeup.
KAGAN: Yes, we're talking makeup, but this was a great idea, huh, going on national TV with no makeup.
WHITFIELD: You look fabulous.
KAGAN: Explain in a moment why we chose to do that.
Darling, the check is in the mail.
OK, I am at L'Ermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills. It's so fun to be here today. There's about 20 suites with all these companies that want to service the stars on Oscar night, and we're going to be going to the different suites throughout the day.
For instance, these are some fabulous handbags. We'll be talking about those in just a minute. But please, let's talk makeup and we're going to do that with Maria Magdelena. She has -- and she's with us. Good morning.
MARIA MAGDELENA, MAKEUP ARTIST: Good morning.
KAGAN: You have a line of makeup, not just makeup, you have gem stones...
MAGDELENA: Yes.
KAGAN: ... diamonds and rubies ground up into your makeup. MAGDELENA: Yes.
KAGAN: What's the purpose of that?
MAGDELENA: It's healthy, and we didn't use any plant or animal things, so we don't have to preserve the cosmetic.
KAGAN: And by having the gems, that's what the gems do, help you from doing that?
MAGDELENA: No. It's a mineral and a rock doesn't turn bad if you keep it a million years or 10 years. It is, it stays in the same condition. But if you have a plant or an animal thing like oils and...
KAGAN: It can break down.
MAGDELENA: Yes. And then you have to preserve it, to preserve this, and those are bad for the skin so.
KAGAN: So when people hear gem stones in the makeup, they're thinking oh my god, this makeup must cost like $1 million dollars just for a lipstick. Is your makeup really expensive?
MAGDELENA: Not too bad. The retail price will be $27. yes.
KAGAN: Twenty-seven dollars for, like, what type of product?
MAGDELENA: For color powder.
KAGAN: Oh, for the power?
MAGDELENA: And you can use it for more purposes.
KAGAN: All different types of things?
MAGDELENA: Yes.
KAGAN: Now, we were talking trends a little bit earlier before we went on the air and one of the things you're excited about for Oscars...
MAGDELENA: Yes.
KAGAN: ... you think there's going to be gem stones, the stars are actually going to put certain kind of gem stones on?
MAGDELENA: Yes.
KAGAN: Like this. So these are some of the examples. Now where would these go?
MAGDELENA: On your face.
KAGAN: Here? Like by your navel?
MAGDELENA: Yes.
KAGAN: OK.
MAGDELENA: And yes, wherever you want them on, where you like.
KAGAN: OK. Well, this is what we're going to do. With the help of Mary Magdelena's makeup artist, Joe, we're going to clean me up, put on a bunch of makeup, go glamorous and do some gem stones.
And we'll see you in about an hour and, Fredricka, I hope to be looking a little bit better for you.
MAGDELENA: You will not look better.
WHITFIELD: Oh, that's pretty cool.
KAGAN: OK.
WHITFIELD: And overall, Daryn, then over the next hour and a half you're going to get a major makeover from head to toe. So not just makeup, but we're going to be seeing some other good treats, too.
KAGAN: Yes, I, right. One of the -- in another suite there are designer gowns and I've picked out three or four of (AUDIO GAP) throughout the day and I'm going to have the first one on for you in about an hour. So clean me up.
WHITFIELD: Oh, very cool. I like it.
KAGAN: OK.
WHITFIELD: All right, thanks a lot, Daryn.
KAGAN: All right, we have a lot of work to do so we're going to go.
WHITFIELD: Oh, OK. OK, very much. We're not going to stall you anymore. All right, thanks a lot, Daryn.
