PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: And up front this morning, she vanished without a trace. Washington intern Chandra Levy was last seen alive one year ago today. Her romantic involvement with a California congressman made the story front page news.

And Kathleen Koch reports now on where the investigation stands today.

KATHLEEN KOCH, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): A year later, a daughter still missing and a personal tragedy pushed from the headlines by a national one, after September 11, Chandra Levy's parents suffering in silence.

DR. ROBERT LEVY, CHANDRA LEVY'S FATHER: It's just missing her, just not having her, going every day. You wake up in the morning and, you know, you know it's the same thing, she's not -- we don't have her, we don't know, you've got to go through another day.

KOCH: Despite deployment of crack FBI cold case investigators, no new evidence has emerged. Chandra Levy's disappearance remains a missing persons case, no evidence of foul play. The only new development, Congressman Gary Condit called before a grand jury two weeks ago.

MIKE DOYLE, "MODESTO BEE": We know that Mr. Candidate's documents were subpoenaed. We know that Mr. Condit was himself subpoenaed. But what he said, for how long, what he did not say is a black box.

KOCH: From the beginning the case has been rife with mystery and, critics say, missteps. The 24-year-old Bureau of Prisons intern was last seen at this Washington health club. Computer records show she surfed the Internet the next day then disappeared. But it took more than two months before sources say the California congressman admitted to an affair with Levy and volunteered to let police search his apartment.

Police interviews with residents of Levy's apartment building took even longer. And a security videotape of the lobby the day she disappeared was recorded over before police asked for it.

Chandra Levy Web sites still take tips. D.C. police, with FBI help, are still working the case. But only the U.S. attorney's office will comment, calling the investigation active and ongoing. Not ongoing, Congressman Condit's political career.

GARY CONDIT: It's been a great opportunity to be in public service.

KOCH: He suffered a devastating March primary loss despite repeatedly denying any wrongdoing.

CONDIT: I had nothing to do with her disappearance.

KOCH (on camera): The Levys will be in Washington, D.C. for a candlelight vigil Wednesday night. They're hoping that someone who knows something about their daughter's whereabouts will finally come forward.
