JACK CAFFERTY, CNN ANCHOR: Well, it's not good. The U.S. soccer team is behind 2-0 to Poland in its World Cup match this morning. This is a make-or-break deal for the U.S. team. It must either win or tie Poland in order to advance through to the second round. Poland has already been eliminated. Britain is out. France is out. And of course, the world is going crazy.
Richard Quest, right in the middle of it all over there in London for our regular Friday feature, which is called, cleverly, "Over There."
Good morning -- happy Friday. How are you doing?
RICHARD QUEST, CNN CORRESPONDENT: You deprived me of me only bit of enjoyment so far this morning, Jack...
CAFFERTY: Good. What was that?
QUEST: ... to rub salt into that wound -- Poland, 2, USA, 0. And according to my colleagues behind, it's almost curtains for Team USA.
CAFFERTY: Now, wait a second! Wait, let me ask you a question.
QUEST: OK.
CAFFERTY: Isn't England already out?
QUEST: What?
CAFFERTY: You're out right?
QUEST: No!
CAFFERTY: Yes?
QUEST: No, we are not. We had a stunning...
CAFFERTY: Oh, Britain is in -- I am sorry. France is out -- excuse me.
QUEST: Now, this is...
CAFFERTY: Wishful thinking on my part. QUEST: Oh, no, this is important stuff. What you lot don't seem to realize is that while you are virtually ignoring this, every newspaper in the rest of the world is covering this with absolute aplomb. England 1, Argentina 0.
CAFFERTY: Keep going, you'll disappear in a minute.
QUEST: (UNINTELLIGIBLE). We are not quite sure what it means, but it basically is about the game. And we are through.
This is huge, and the people involved in it are absolute stars. And really, the United States is missing out on it completely. It does look as if you are not going to get to -- or we'll know in the next hour whether you will or not. But for the rest of the world, now we go into the knockout parts of the competition, and England is through. We play Denmark tomorrow, and that should be a marvelous, marvelous match.
But anyway, one other thing I want to move on to, if I may, since you clearly have no respect when it comes to the true art of football. Earlier this week, we were talking, and I spent four days outside a castle in Ireland...
CAFFERTY: Yes.
QUEST: ... in the rain, reporting, of course, McCartney to Mills. And what one of the newspapers in Britain has very cleverly done is point out the similarity, perhaps unkindly, between Paul McCartney's new wife, Heather Mills, and his former wife, the late Linda McCartney. And as you can see, the similarities are striking, everything from the kiss, to the part where they both did the V sign for peace, to the fact that they both sang together, the look on the face. And everybody says that Paul McCartney has once again managed to marry a younger, blonde, strong woman with strongly held causes and views, such as vegetarianism. In Heather Mills's case, it's minefields.
I am not sure whether it's not a little tasteless. I mean, the man has only just been married, and they are already comparing the new to the old.
CAFFERTY: Yes, it's also an indication that the British press is a little hungry for stuff to occupy their time, I would think.
The last item is I guess we should, what, send a thank you note to the royal family? They have talked to Ferguson -- what's her name, Fergie -- into staying out of the public view. That would be a blessing that we can all be most grateful for.
PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: Jack!
QUEST: Now, this -- now, thank you. I am glad somebody came to the rescue. This is an interesting story, because during the Jubilee celebrations, she was nowhere to be seen.
CAFFERTY: Good. QUEST: Her children, Beatrice and Eugenie, were there, but she wasn't. And what everybody said is she hadn't been invited. Well, now she wants to put pay to all of these allegations and rumors, so Fergie has basically agreed with the queen that she won't turn up to any royal engagements. They won't invite her, and she won't turn up. The kids will go along, but she won't, because it will be a lot easier for everybody, and we won't have this sort of speculation: Was she being snubbed by her majesty, the queen?
I am still shocked at the whole way perhaps in which the Fergie thing has taken off in this country, in the sense that she is still very much in the public domain. She has been divorced for years, but her children are, of course, the grandchildren of the queen.
Now, with Poland, 2, USA, 0, have a good Friday, Jack.
CAFFERTY: It's early. You know, it's only a three-hour show, Richard. Thank you -- Richard Quest reporting from London.
