Iraq Moving Military Assets
Aired August 12, 2002 - 08:03 ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: If President Bush has plans for invading Iraq, at least one senator says the president should first make his case with the voters. Senator Richard Lugar says the president needs to tell Americans exactly how Saddam Hussein is a threat.
Meanwhile, the Iraqi president is trying to convince the world that he is not the danger.
CNN's Jane Arraf joins us from Baghdad. She is there today with more details -- Jane, hello.
JANE ARRAF, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Daryn.
Well, President Saddam Hussein is being his usual confident self, warning that if the U.S. dares to attack, it will result in many U.S. deaths. Now, we've got to remember that this is a country that officially still believes that it won the Gulf War. So you do have to discount some of that rhetoric.
Nonetheless, the government is obviously taking precautions. For some months now, it's been moving military assets and doing other things readying for any possible military aggression.
As for the people, if you ask them on camera, they'll tell you, as they're supposed to, that they don't care, that they're defiant, that they're not afraid. But obviously they're afraid. Anyone would be. A country that may be about to undergo a major military attack, people are quite worried -- Daryn.
KAGAN: Jane Arraf bringing us the latest from Baghdad.
Jane, thank you.
