BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: We want to get more now on that terrifying attack on board a Greyhound bus in California. Two people, again, as we mentioned, are dead.
And James Hattori is live on the scene in Fresno now with more there -- James, hello.

JAMES HATTORI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Bill.

It was supposed to be a routine trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Instead, you can see behind me, a Greyhound bus sits on its side in the middle of a cotton field after careening off Interstate 5 when a passenger attacked the driver with a knife.

It happened around nine o'clock last night, West Coast time. Forty-six passengers on board. Two are dead, three seriously injured. They were evacuated by helicopter from the scene. Among them, the driver, who is described now as in stable condition.

Witnesses say the driver lost control of the bus when a man rushed from the back of the vehicle with no warning, apparently, and attacked the driver, wounding him in the neck. Investigators say they don't know what the suspect's motive was. He's described as a Hispanic male from southern California.

Now, Bill, luckily almost half the passengers, 21 of the 46, were uninjured or at least well enough to complete their trip last night -- Bill, we'll keep you updated throughout the rest of the morning.

HEMMER: A developing story there.

James, thanks.
