BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Quickly to Montgomery County. Here's the police chief talking today for the second time in the past two hours.
CHIEF CHARLES MOOSE, MONTGOMERY COUNTY POLICE: ... numerous weapons that fired that round. And, again, we're not saying that we have the specific gun. We're saying we're 90 percent sure it's a .223 round, maybe another 10 percent it could be a .222 round, which is also a very high velocity round. But we're talking about the round, not talking about the actual weapon itself.
I also want to remind you that the cargo van, the box van remains a vehicle of interest. That doesn't preclude the fact that other vehicles have been seen in and around these locations. It doesn't preclude the fact that investigators will be talking to other people. Nothing is off the board. Nothing is exclusive.
We still want the van. There could be other things that we're interested in. We don't want to, again, be too narrow in our investigation.
Also, back to the weapon, again, it's just various types of weapons. If you look at the last weapon on the handout, it's actually something that you can hold in one hand. So if you wanted to say can a handgun do this, they design them that way. So there are rifles and the example on the last page.
So, again, nothing is at this point pinned down. Nothing is exact. So we don't want to be too loose here, but at the same hand we don't want to get a message out there that anything is absolute or anything is eliminated.
So people that may know someone with this type of weapon, we don't want them to not call because somehow we have sent some message that a weapon is eliminated. Everyone that knows someone, if the weapon's missing, if the weapon's been out, we want to talk to them. We want to know what they think. We want to know how they feel about that.
Also, I want to say that as you monitor activity in the county, we have had a lot of reports of loud noises, backfires, possible gunshots. All of those situations have been investigated. We have responded to them. We will continue to respond to them. If we have a shooting in the county, we will share that information. We will release that information. And I'm here to say we've not had any shootings this morning. But we have had a lot of people call us. No doubt, I'm on edge. People in our community are on edge. People are hearing things. People are doing what we ask. We've asked them to call. We're responding. We're following up. No shots have been fired in the county at this time.
But, again, yes, there have been calls. People have heard things. People are on edge. But it all makes sense. We're all human and we're all afraid. So, but again, if something happens, we will share that information.
We want to take a few questions and then we plan to do another briefing at 9:30.
QUESTION: Chief, do you think they're still in the area?
MOOSE: Again, we're operating...
HEMMER: Chief Charlie Moose again in Rockville, Maryland.
We're going to talk with the Chief in a matter of moments here, as soon as he gets done briefing reporters there.
But, again, as he said, no new shootings this morning. No bullets fired, apparently, is the information they're gathering throughout Montgomery County.
Five random shootings in about a 16 hour period, certainly leaving a lot of folks startled and on edge today, as you heard the Chief mention that.
We'll talk to him in a moment.
