PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: It is Thursday, of course, as a Virginia man, the latest victim of a shooting spree that has people in and around Washington living in fear.
We're going to come to you from two locations this morning. Bill Hemmer is standing by in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Good morning -- Bill.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Paula, good morning to you.

Another shooting again last night. We should stress right now, Paula, it is not known right now as to whether or not there is any connection to the previous sniper shootings we have reported on for the past eight days and running.

I'll tell you a little more about it, though. Last night, 8:15 local time at a Sunoco station in Manassas, Virginia -- that's about 40 miles southwest of our location here in Rockville, Maryland.

What we do not know right now that's quite substantial -- and perhaps in a matter of moments, we'll find out more -- how many shots were fired? Was it one or more? What type of bullet was used last night, and from what distance was that shot fired?

All of these questions, Paula, before investigators, as they pour over that area, dozens of investigators responding to the scene last night and into the overnight hours in Manassas, Virginia.

Meanwhile, we do anticipate the police chief, Charlie Moose, to come out and brief reporters in about 13 minutes' time. It's quite possible we will know more about what happened last night when the police chief does come out here.

There is a bevy of reporters who have responded to this scene here in Rockville, Maryland. It has the attention of the country yet again today, and again, we are awaiting further confirmation as to a connection from last evening.

Douglas Duncan, you've seen him on our air, Paula, for the past week running, the Montgomery County executive, he, too, will be along in a matter of moments. We'll talk to him about more in just a minute here.

Back to you now in New York City -- Paula.

ZAHN: All right, we'll come back to you shortly. TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com.
