PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: The latest on the sniper investigation in just a moment from Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose. He will be talking with Bill Hemmer, who is standing by there at the investigation's central point this morning -- good morning, Bill.
BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Yes, Paula, good morning again to you.

Again, we are standing by right now and still awaiting word, confirmation one way or the other about the shooting that happened last night a little bit past eight o'clock in Manassas, Virginia. Again, Manassas in Prince William County, which is about 40 miles southwest of our location here in Rockville, Maryland.

Again, the ballistics testing is being conducted. We have not been given word one way or another if the latest shooting can be tied to the previous eight that we have talked about over the past eight days and running.

The toll as it stands right now, Paula, is six dead, two wounded and it's possible one way or another we'll know very soon, in the next coming hours, about this situation last night.

To give you a sense of how much right now authorities are encouraging more tips and more phone information, they're handing out these placards to all the reporters here. It's a new nationwide hotline, 888-324-9800 is the number that everyone's being encouraged to call in case they have information or tips that may help investigators here.

You mentioned the police chief. We'll talk to him in a matter of moments live here on a.m., Paula.

Back to you in a moment.

ZAHN: Thanks, Bill.
