BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Back to the scene there in Falls Church in the parking lot of that Home Depot, where Bob Franken has been for the better part of a week now, scouring about the area, trying to find out more information for us.
Bob, good morning again.

BOB FRANKEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Bill.

What they're now trying to decide is whether the original description which had the sniper in his van in the garage, whether the number of people who told that were relying on their own vision of it or whether they were relying on word of mouth. And the word of mouth perhaps originating perhaps with the witness who they now say was not a witness at all; he was inside the store.

As a result of the fact that they just don't know, what they are doing now is have moved their search from that area to the entire area. And they really focused yesterday across the street, out there where you can see in the parking lot, where we had a tremendous idea of what they were doing because of the large number of police cadets who were brought in. That's become a routine strategy in this thing, they do the grunt work, the search work. They were scouring the ground, they were on their knees, and they covered every single inch of that area. They went through that entire parking lot, checking on the vehicles that were there, stopping vehicles, looking to see if their tires had picked up some piece of evidence, looking on the grass to see if there was something there.

We don't know if they found anything, although I must tell you, as we were watching them, it didn't look like they did. They searched the median strips. The one thing that became quite clear, is as the search went on, it also included a survey that was being done inside the parking garage. There were some high-tech laser mapping material that was being used, instruments that were being used to map every bit of that garage.

As a matter of fact, they were still doing it this morning. They also mapped the entire area, and we're saying wherever it happened, they were able to map this area, with something that took yesterday and part of this morning. The fact of the matter is they don't know. That's he hard part.

What they do know is that wherever he shot, whether it was in the garage or whether it was across the street, there was easy access to the highway. It was very easy for the sniper to get back into his vehicle, whatever it was, and to melt into the night -- Bill. HEMMER: So true. Bob, thanks. Bob Franken, the parking lot of that Home Depot.
